Recreational Activities on the plateau

Opportunities for practising sports in this area and in its vicinity are many. The flat landscape of the plateau facilitates walks along the paved roads shaded by ash and beech trees. For those who want to avoid walking on the asphalt while discovering the area, our forefathers carved many paths to increase grazing land by removing stones from the fields and placing them one on top of the other to create “roads” for cattle.

Today, these paths are used for excursions to Monte Prat to see abandoned houses, old wells once used to water the animals and charming beech woods. An excellent, detailed map of these paths is available at the reception desk where all necessary information regarding activities of interest can be found.

Mobile phone reception cannot be guaranteed throughout the plateau. The provider with the best coverage is TIM.

CYCLING

Thanks to clear, precise mapping of the various circuits, you can discover the plateau in an original way, venturing into a thick network of well-signposted paths for mountain bikes. A detailed map of these paths is available at the reception desk, illustrating their degree of difficulty – ranging from those specially devised for families to those suitable for professionals.

For those who prefer road bikes, it is interesting to know that the position of the municipality of Forgaria is ideal for reaching some of the Friuli region’s most picturesque places.

HIKING

LThe plateau’s surface is crossed by over 40 Km of pathways mapped by C.A.I. (n.814-815-816-817-818, ed. Tabacco 020). Among the many fascinating destinations, the most evocative of all is the one that will really give you a challenge: the climb up Monte Cuar (1478 metres). The reception desk will provide all information regarding the open paths in the area, split up into categories such as length, difficulty as well as advice as to whether the hiker should be accompanied.

FISHING

Forgaria nel Friuli can satisfy those who love river fishing, offering the possibility to practice this sport very close to our hotel along the banks of the Tagliamento river and the Arzino torrent. Our staff at the reception desk can provide you with a fishing permit upon presentation of your personal authorized license.

Even those with less experience can try their hand at game fishing in the nearby municipal lakes of Pakar, surrounded by swans and wild ducks.

KAYAKING

If you bring your own kayak, you can experience the thrill of shooting down the rapids of the Arzino torrent among the rocks and canyons of the mountain walls which have been eroded over the centuries by natural agents. Along the descent, the torrent changes its course, offering evocative twists and clear pools where you can fill your lungs with the fragrance of the surrounding woods…

If you prefer a less turbulent descent, the wider course of the Tagliamento river is ideal. This activity is not open all year round, due to climate variations that have an influence upon the water’s course. We advise you to get information available at athletic associations regarding the best time of the year to practice this sport.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING

The renowned practice wall at the Masarach gym located in the nearby town of Vito d’Asio has been open since 1985. It has been officially declared "Italy’s most convenient gym" and all climbers can try their hand here, from the most demanding ones – with levels of difficulty that surpass level 10 to those who are less demanding on level 6 to newcomers to the sport on levels 3 and 4.

Over 100 tracks have been created in the area, all of which offer maximum security, equipped with chains. Moreover, benches, gazebos and car parks are distributed throughout the area for those who need a refreshing break. Night climbing is also possible!

BATHING AREAS

There are many places to find relief during the hot summer days without having to leave the municipality of Forgaria nel Friuli! An ideal spot is along the pebbly shores of the Tagliamento river, where one can take a sun bath, go for a swim or simply relax in the shade of the woods.

Another popular destination is the Arzino torrent where both tourists and natives of the area can challenge the gelid mountain waters with dives and long swims; we suggest a "secret" place of extraordinary beauty known as "Cjaliane" which is accessible through a short path that begins in Forgaria and leads to the recently restored historic footbridge over the Arzino.

EDUCATIONAL PETTING FARM AND NATURE WORKSHOP

Schoolchildren, associations and summer centres can also come to Forgaria nel Friuli to get better acquainted with animals at the educational petting farm in Monte Prat. Children will enjoy themselves, learning about handcrafts, in the great outdoors.

Furthermore, there is an educational nature workshop in Cornino called "Life, colours and shapes beyond the Tagliamento river": this centre offers an opportunity to learn about environmental issues though practical and experimental activities while using various tools, depending on the age of the participants.

We advise you to attend the workshop as well as to take a tour of the Geis and Riscjei house of manual crafts museum and the Cornino Lake reserve.
